Saturday 17th January 2009 and I attended the last Bugged Out! at one of the best nightclubs in London. It was definitely a night to rememeber with a spectacular line up and only one week left before The End closed its doors to the public for good. After 13 successful years as one of the UK’s leading nightclubs, the owners decided to end on a high and sell up. But it won’t be forgotten in a hurry as the club has dominated numerous events in dance history and I won’t be forgetting my experience.
For all those electro and house lovers, Erol Alkan and Justice did all the right things with an amazing two hour set each. But once I was in I could actually rave like my life depended on it after being one of the unlucky few to face a four and a half hour queue in torrential rain! That’s certainly dedication for you and after two hours and about thirty people in front of us the bouncers gave priority to the ticket holders (lucky gits) and down came the rain! As this was going to be my first and last visit to The End, I grinned and beared it and queued along with around 200 others waiting to say goodbye to a legendary club, and of course see some of the best DJ’s dominating the dance music scene today.
So once inside and £25 later I ran to the toilets, sorted myself out (like many of the other girls) grabbed a strong drink and headed straight to the dance floor just in time to catch the start of Justice’s DJ set, which was a hundred times better than the queue entertainment from a group of lads chanting “We Are Your Friends!” You have to admire these people still smiling ready to party till the early hours of the morning whilst, like me they were soaked to the bone!
This was my fourth time seeing Justice DJ live and the French duo didn’t disappoint exciting the crowd and teasing us with tunes from their lastest album A Cross the Universe. The crowd weren’t as hyped up as those who attended their album tour alongside Ed Banger legends DJ Mehdi, So-Me and Busy P at Matter in October 2008. But never the less they made this Bugged Out! one to remember. With a top sound and lighting system, The End defiantly proved that it was one of the best venues in London for lovers of dance music. It will certainly be missed as a couple of regular goers told me they are sad to see it go after attending the club for almost six years. But for all those reading this and thinking you may have missed out, don’t worry as the 02’s new club Matter is taking over most of The End’s nights such as the drum and bass night Ram Records and Bugged Out! But Bugged Out! isn't set to stay there for long and will be moving around for the next six months before settling into a new residency in September.
As for Erol’s set, one word sums that up and that is brilliant! This is the second time I have seen Erol after his massive 2007 set at Global Gathering and the king of remixes certainly got the crowd going especially with his version of Proxy’s Dancing in the Dark. Come 5am and the club is still full with people dancing away to a memorable night that consisted of huge Bugged Out! classics. Matt Walsh played fun techno beats just before Justice, Skull Juice played their classics from their time at The End and Hannah Holland stepped into exhilarating techno to make the crowd go insane. Also throughout the night, Brendan Long dropped his electro beats, Severino played classic acid house and JoJo De Freq finshed up in the main room with cosmic electronic sounds.
So… as we say goodbye to The End we say hello to more amazing Bugged Out! nights and keep your eyes peeled for the new venue! As for my first and final experience at this legendary club it was one I’ll keep in my mind for a long time and as most of you read this and remember your End experiences I will finish by saying it is ultimately the end of an era!
