When this landed in our mail box we were excited, we had already been well aware of the drop for months and knew that already sales had hit the roof. Here at Underground Music HQ we have big respect for Frictions label and talented selection of artists. One that has impressed us so much over the last two years, we have made a pledge to ourselves to place him on our “to book” list, for one of our upcoming nights. That artist is Icicle. His production has attention to detail and his live mixing has been going down a storm. We think it’s time we took a trip to Digital in Brighton for a Shogun night!
So “Assassin Volume One” is it just another DNB compilation mix CD produced to generate label revenue or does it deliver much more than just that!?
‘Assassin Volume One’ brings a top quality selection already stated by “DNB’s best producers 2009” (Chase and Status) and not only shows Shoguns leader as a brilliant dj but great producer as well. With this mix CD featuring some of Friction’s own collaborating projects with some of Shoguns own artists productions it builds and establishes the labels name even further on the map. With Drum and Bass only becoming closer to other music streams with genre hopping artists and friction featuring some of these on ‘Assassin’, there’s always going to be more mainstream ears listening to this material. The industry has artists such as Pendulum. Zinc & Chase and Status to thank for that.
With the CD featuring a huge list of 32 tracks with mixing in quick succession this not only displays frictions good quality mixing but ability to switch the vibes at the same pace to suit at any time. Friction in complete control as everyone has known for so many years. When you compare ‘Assassin’ to other products on the market it has a huge task to compete with the best like Andy C’s ‘Nightlife’ collection released on the DNB label giant Ram Records. In our opinion its always going to take a lot to better the main man in DNB however we would still class ‘Assassin’ up there with the ‘Nightlife’s’ and ‘DNB Essentials’. These days more and more fans will go out and buy a compilation, especially if they are new to the scene. The same theory applies to pop music and I’m sure you would be surprised at how many young children have the latest “Now that’s what I call music” on their Christmas lists. So apply that to a different audience and your see that the same trend applies. Not everyone in the dnb scene are DJ’s and looking for the latest plates. ‘Assassin’ may not be on Vinyl and it’s a completely different product aimed at a slightly different market sector than your average 12” but it’s still selling like hot cakes!
Mix compilations like this often bring so many people out to the clubs so we strongly recommend that you head off out to a Shogun night right away. I’m sure the ‘Nightlife’ collections made Fabrics bar a fair bit of cash over the years and that’s just one release from one label.
One thing’s for certain ‘Assassin’ shows frictions crew really do have it going on and as much as the big three. If this has not already grabbed your attention it definitely should have and its well worth the listen if you wish to be educated.
When products like this are sold, big things happen, so take our advice, sit back, relax and wait and see. But make sure you don’t hang about to get your tickets because these days drum and bass is in DEMAND!
