At the beginning of February there were whispers, by the end of the month everybody was talking about it. Rusko was coming to town and whether it was people planning their early arrival for fear of the venue reaching capacity, or rumours that he may not turn up Wednesday the 3rd of March, ‘Wax Presents Rusko’ had been the talk of the town for over a month. Tonight the atmosphere was different, tonight Rhino looked and felt different, tonight Wax had just stepped up a gear. There was a lot more space than usual which meant there was room to move around, firstly because they had opened the back area and bar which is normally curtained off. Secondly the downstairs room was open, not only did this room provide the extra space Wax is beginning to need but it also served as an ambient area where people could take a break from the melodic madness metres above them.
Wax regulars were in for a treat tonight as two of the nights residents played a B2B set. Gerra and Rocksteddy, effortlessly bounced off one another’s selection, dropping tunes like UNITZ ‘The Drop’ to set the standard for the night. TTB played the following set and once again beautifully showcased his excessive knowledge of Dubstep. With an incredibly impressive skill that all good residents must master, TTB warmed the crowd perfectly, creating the pefect balance of hype and anticipation without allowing the night to peek before the headling set. His balance was created with the help of mantras like Spectasoul’s ‘Guidian’, if you like this sound don’t forget to catch Wax presents Spectrasoul at Rhino club on the 17 of March.
The club filled with cries of appreciation as Visionobi announced the last tune of the resident’s set, and as Rusko stepped up to the ones and twos, the cries transformed from appreciation to anticipation. Our usual host stepped down for an hour to make way for a guest appearance from MC Firekid. From the very first drop Rusko had complete control of the crowd. The fresh sounds of Rusko’s ‘Soundboy Is My Target’ and ‘Four Seasons of Rave’ had the crowd bouncing and bubbling. As the beats continued to roll class tracks like ‘Jahova’ and ‘Cockney’ had the atmosphere of the crowd coming up to an almost unbearable intensity. The feeling was so infectious, it even engulfed the booth and had Rusko and Firekid both shocking out as hard as the crowd.
The most memorable point of Rusko’s set was the sudden blast of silence immediately followed by the drop of “Whacha Say”, which divided the club completely. Half were singing along to the iconic Imogen Heap lyrics, while the other half (including myself) stood bemused, at the thought of Rusko playing such a tune on a night like this. However fears for Rusko’s sanity soon evaporated, with full exposure to the filthy bass and low rumble of Rusko’s very own remix of the classic ‘Hide and Seek’
As the weeks go by Wax just gets bigger and better and now Wax fans can now buy Wax t-shirts and hoodies to show their love and support the night. These are available at the back bar of Rhino on Wax nights.
